Benidorm's Beautiful Barman of the Month December 2009

We would like to announce our new Benidorm Beautiful Barman of Month for December but we think we have made a mistake. Is this months barman straight?

When we met up with Dave in his bar Chaplins, in the heart of the old town we set him a challenge to prove he was gay, and before you let your minds run away with yourselves, this was just an interview.

When you meet Dave it does strike you what a rugged looking man he is, dark hair, stubble, non designer t-shirt and jeans, this is no camp twink, so from outward appearances there is certainly nothing that gives away that he might be Old Town than New Town.

Dave has been in Benidorm for seven and a half years and has never lived or worked anywhere else other than the old town. Back in the UK he had a diverse number of jobs including a pub in liverpool, selling double glazing and as a butcher, not the most camp of positions but at least he is used to handling meat (sorry could not resist). Like so many of us Dave came to Benidorm on holiday and loved it and has been here ever since.

So where does Dave like to hang out, does his drinking habits gives us a clue to his life style. Cafe B, Queens, Rich Bitch, Company Bar and of course Chaplins, one of the oldest gay bars in Benidorm. Ok so not the straightest of venues maybe Dave is our man. However when we asked him what he liked to drink his first response was tea but at least he followed it up with Champaign and Vodka.

Now Dave does like to dance and sing, often being found singing karaoke in Queens and his choice of song are classics, often picking Sinatra over the latest hits, but then came the big revelation. “What´s your favourite Kylie song?” was asked, “I don´t like Kylie” Dave told us .After a couple of minutes of stunned silence we really started to question if we were in the right place.

So is there anything else to support the case for a man who only owns six pairs of shoes being gay. Well he is known for his quick whit and can not tell you a thing about football, he loves to sunbathe and a good laugh. People call him charming, including the women that try and give him their telephone number in the bar. He also likes to cook.

However, his favourite programme on TV is The Bill, he does not like shopping for clothes, doesn´t like european art house movies (you know the ones) and once fell asleep in the back of a lorry when he came home pissed. In his defense the lorry did have a bed in it that was being delivered.

Well, Dave Smith is Benidorm´s Barman of the Month for December, and he might be a man´s man but hell, I challenge you to find me a gay man that does not find that very sexy.

So pop down and see Dave in Chaplins where he and his friend Nigel can be found seven nights a week. Don´t forget to buy him a drink.
